What I liked

I really enjoyed the tight-knit workplace atmosphere, fully hybridized setup, ability to work closely with my supervisor, and office amenities!

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a little bit more training at the beginning of the internship program. Often, it felt like I was jumping into tasks which I didn't really know how to do.

Advice

Leverage your connections, particularly those on LinkedIn! Second, be willing to put yourself out there and try new things. I had a great time and learned a lot!

Civil Engineering Intern

What I liked

I loved the diversity of opportunities that are available at Stantec. It's such a large company that you get that wide range of projects, but you also don't feel like just a number. The New York City office was a very close group, and there were many fun out-of-office activities that helped me get to know my co-workers on a personal level. The support I received from my co-workers was outstanding, as everybody wanted to help me learn and succeed. I continued to develop my technical skills this summer, and I gained more knowledge of civil engineering in general by changing locations this summer.

What I wish was different

Something I wish had been different was my prior knowledge of the New York City area. It is a very crowded and packed area, which makes a lot of projects challenging. Although a challenging task is a good thing, as someone coming from the Midwest it sometimes felt overwhelming. Being familiar with the area you are working in is also helpful when getting to know co-workers, but being from somewhere else also made conversations interesting.

Advice

I would say going into every new work experience with an open mind is key. Learning new things is a huge part of any career, and the more you learn sooner the better. Also, reaching out and connecting with as many people as possible can help you get to where you want to be. I got my position this summer by attending a seminar at work and reaching out to the host. Making connections like these early helps lead to success down the road, even if it's years later. Also, ask plenty of questions, people are happy to help you!

The number and nature of projects being conducted can interfere with how much experience you get.

Site Civil Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed working on real projects - they didn't leave me with strictly redlining. I was asked what I would be working on each week, same as the full time designers. At Stantec I had the flexibility to work on what I wanted, but that just made me want to work harder. I had the opportunity to impact the projects I was on and I truly felt apart of the team, even as an intern. I learned so much, and this internship made me realize how much I enjoyed site design.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had a little bit more time on a few projects rather than helping with multiple. I got a taste for many kinds of projects but I never got familiar with them. With that being said, I was on one project towards the end of the summer and I felt like I knew it like the back of my hand by the time I left.

Advice

Don't doubt your abilities. You can learn fast and your coworkers want to see you succeed.

The office does a great job of exposing me to a variety of engineering tasks including fieldwork.

I wish that I had the opportunity to shadow a variety of different levels of engineers on more of their day to day tasks.

Working with the Designers at Stantec was incredible. I also had the opportunity to work with five other interns on an cross-disciplinary project for a nonprofit. Stantec was dedicated to its interns regardless of the pandemic.

What I wish was different

I wish I had got to work at this firm for the whole summer, however, it was cut short due to COVID-19.

Great pay and great people to work with.the work itself is also fun and you get to see some cool places in Nevada.

What I wish was different

The schedual can be a bit hard sometimes, you work 12 hour days 5 days a week (sometimes more) and the work day starts at 6 am. So if you would like to have somewhat of a personal life during the summer, this wouldnt be the job for you.

Advice

Just plan to be busy all summer! You'll make a ton of money, just want get to have a life.

What I liked

Learning about the office environment and seeing how a professional setting works. The people I worked with were awesome and very helpful in directing me where I want to start my full time career.

What I wish was different

I was behind a computer screen all day every day. It was rewarding but definitely not always enjoyable.

Advice

You have to learn what you don’t like in order to push you in the direction to find what you love. Being in the office made me realize that I want to spend more time in the field in my career.

What I liked

I loved the people the most - the entire staff is so friendly, most of them are so young. It feels like you’re family when you’re at work. They value coworker relationships so strongly- so many social events happening all the time.

What I wish was different

I honestly can’t think of anything I’d change.

Advice

Never complain - if you don’t know how to do something, don’t complain to another at your level - ask whoever assigned the task. They will be more than willing to help you learn.
